17th Sunday After Pentecost

Welcome to Our Worship: Matthew narrates one of Jesus’ controversial parables in which Jesus says that the reign of God is like that of a landowner who pays his workers the same wage no matter what time of day they began to work. When God changes God’s mind about punishing Nineveh for their evil ways, Jonah is angry. Yet God is gracious and merciful, abounding in steadfast love. In baptism we receive the grace of God that is freely given to all. As Martin Luther wrote, in the presence of God’s mercy we are all beggars.

Worship and Communion: Christian celebrations of anniversaries are occasions for thanksgiving for past blessings from God, affirmation of what God is doing in the present, and hopeful expectation for what God will do in the future. Because congregations are first and foremost assemblies of God’s people around word and sacrament, this is an important time in our congregation’s life, and we are glad that you are celebrating with us today. If you are visiting or new to our faith family, please fill out the yellow guest card and put it in the offering plate so we may have a record of your presence today. Come back and worship with us each Sunday at 10 a.m. The Sacrament of Holy Communion is offered to all worshiping today. You may come forward for the sacraments or cross your arms in front of you for a blessing.

Fellowship Time: Please join us after worship today in the Fellowship Hall for our 135th Anniversary celebration. We will share our history and enjoy barbecue, an ice cream social, and special music.
