On Sunday, Aug. 18, Zion’s voting members by a 77 percent margin voted to approve the church council’s continuation of the Reconciling in Christ (RIC) discernment process.
The action came as part of a special congregational meeting called by the council in response to requests by congregation members who questioned the process.
The meeting began with a report on behalf of the church council and of the RIC core team, outlining Zion’s RIC discernment process to date. A motion from the floor called for discussion and a vote to "affirm the unanimous church council decision to continue the RIC (Reconciling in Christ) discernment process.” After discussion, the motion passed 30 to 9, in support of continuing the RIC journey, which means that the church council and the RIC core team will continue the process of discernment toward becoming an RIC congregation.
The purpose of the RIC program is to ensure that Zion’s is a welcoming, inclusive congregation that celebrates and advocates for people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expression and works for racial equity including a commitment to anti-racist work. Once approved as an RIC congregation, Zion’s will become the only openly affirming
Zion’s welcomes participation and discussion from the community as we continue our RIC journey, looking forward to a future as Trinidad’s fully affirming congregation.
