For several years, Zion’s has joined churches and civic groups nationwide to help transform Super Bowl weekend into a nationwide movement intended to inspire people to give locally while making a collective impact on hunger.
Zion’s will do so this month, collecting canned goods and non-perishable food items each Sunday in February.
Souper Bowl of Caring was begun in 1990. That is when Brad Smith, a Presbyterian seminary intern, offered a simple prayer to a youth group at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church in Columbia, South Carolina, "Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat”.
The prayer took root and gave birth to an idea, “Why not harness the energy and enthusiasm of Super Bowl weekend -- a time when people come together for football, food, and fun -- to unite the nation for a higher good?” The concept was simple; congregations collect food and funds for those in need then send all donations directly to the charity of their choice.
So, consider bringing donations of canned goods and other non-perishable food items to worship. Place these gifts in the soup pot at the front of the Sanctuary near the piano. At the end of February, Pr. Lisa will offer a special blessing and all donations then will be given to Trinidad’s Soup Kitchen.
